City of Heroes Strategy Guide
1.1.3. Tips for Beginners
Paragon City is overrun with crime and otherworldly threats. Your role as a
superhero is to clean up the city. There are a number of zones, each with a particular level range of villains inhabiting it. Zones are separated by large walls and connected via gates along some walls. There are train stations in most zones, the Yellow Line caters to the newbie zones and the Green Line covers the more difficult areas. Additionally, some zones are connected via tunnels, by boats, and at a special spot called the Paragon Dance Party.
If you happen to upset any villains on the street as you traverse the zone, you can usually out run them all. Most do not follow you a great distance, although flying foes tend to chase you farther. Also, spend time setting up the interface and getting used to swinging around the camera and changing your view. This will be a big help and make your hero experience more enjoyable.
The most important thing is to develop a comfort level in combat. It is a process
that is required for even experienced players trying out different character types. You need to be able to know exactly which enemies at what level you can handle. Don’t keep replaying an epic battle where you repeatedly get killed because you don’t have enough power to win. Just play at a comfortable pace and don’t be afraid to run away or lower your mission difficulty.
The train stations, hospitals, and zone exits have police drones stationed there
who will take out all the bad guys who get too close, use them to save yourself, but beware that they sometimes are a little delayed in their response. If you have a pack of bad guys chasing you, it may take several seconds for the police drones to neutralize them all. Running into enhancement shops is also a valid avoidance technique and a great place to rest. Also, if you can get up there, the ledges on the zone walls are great paths to take when moving through a difficult zone, as are elevated train tracks and power lines.
You will probably find yourself leveling up faster than your ability to buy new
enhancements. Your solution is to simply stop buying the training level enhancements, and save your money for the dual origin ones that will be coming at level 12. Training enhancements are just too weak to waste influence on. However, if you happen to find one as loot, plug it in if you have a free spot. And make sure you sell all the extras whenever you pass by a vendor, you don’t want to run out of free slots midway through a mission and you will need that influence later!
Try to select powers with status protection before you hit level 12. That is the point
when it becomes very important. Covering the toggle-droppers like disorient and hold are
